What is a WEBP file?
WEBP is Google's image format for the web — smaller than an equivalent JPG or PNG at a similar quality, and supported by every modern browser. The catch is that a lot of older software, some CMS platforms, and print or design tools still don't accept it.
Why convert WEBP to PNG?
The main reason is lossless quality and transparency support. PNG is a lossless raster format that preserves transparency — nothing is recompressed away, so it's the safer choice whenever you might need to re-edit the image later or need a see-through background.
How to convert WEBP to PNG
Drag your WEBP file(s) into the box below, or click it to browse. PNG is already selected as the output format, so all you need to do is press Convert and then Download once it finishes — usually within a second or two per file.
WEBP vs PNG

PNG is a lossless raster format that preserves transparency — nothing is recompressed away, so it's the safer choice whenever you might need to re-edit the image later or need a see-through background.
Is the conversion done in my browser?
Yes. Reading the WEBP and encoding the PNG output both happen locally on your device — nothing is uploaded to a server at any point.
Prefer a different output? The same engine on this page can also export to JPG, WEBP, AVIF, ICO, PDF, TIFF — just pick a different format from the dropdown next to your file once it's added, or use the full WEBP converter.
Why WEBP still needs a converter like this
Every modern browser displays WEBP without trouble — the friction shows up elsewhere. Plenty of older photo editors, print shops, some Office and PDF workflows, and a fair number of CMSes and marketplaces were built before WEBP was common, and they either reject the file outright or silently misrender it.
| Capability | Support |
|---|---|
| Decoding your WEBP file (this tool) | Works everywhere — done with the browser's own native image decoder, no library needed |
| Viewing a raw .webp file directly (no converter) | All current browsers · Many older editors, printers, and Office apps |
| Encoding to JPG / PNG (this tool) | All modern browsers |
| Encoding to AVIF (this tool) | Depends on browser — detected automatically, with a clear error if unavailable |
Good to know before you convert
A WEBP file can hold multiple frames like a GIF. This tool converts the first frame only — every output format here (JPG, PNG, AVIF, ICO, PDF, TIFF) is a single still image.
PNG, AVIF, and ICO keep an alpha channel from the source WEBP. JPG, PDF, and TIFF here flatten transparency onto a solid background instead.
Most WEBP files are already lossy-compressed. Converting to PNG or TIFF makes the new file lossless from that point on, but it can't restore detail the original WEBP encoding already discarded.
That's a real limitation of the browser-side TIFF encoder we use, not a hidden setting — expect a notably larger file than the source.
Your photos never leave your device
Decoding the WEBP file and re-encoding it into JPG, PNG, AVIF, ICO, PDF, or TIFF all happen locally in your browser. There's no upload step, no server processing, and nothing is retained after you close the tab.
