What each output format is actually good for

JPG

Universal compatibility. Lossy compression at 92% quality by default here — the standard choice for sharing an already-processed version of your shot.

PNG

Lossless, once the RAW has been demosaiced. Larger files than JPG, but no re-compression artifacts — good for further editing after conversion.

WEBP

Broadly supported (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14+, Edge), and typically 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPG at the same visual quality.

AVIF

Usually the smallest files of the group, but encoding support in browsers is still uneven. If your browser can't produce one, you'll get a clear error instead of a broken file.

ICO

Windows/macOS icon and favicon container. This tool writes a single PNG-compressed icon resized to a maximum of 256×256px.

PDF

Wraps the image as a single, full-page PDF sized exactly to the photo's pixel dimensions — handy for sending a photo as a "document."

TIFF

An archival raster format still used in print workflows. The browser-side encoder used here produces uncompressed TIFF files, so expect a larger file size.

Why RAW files need a converter at all

A RAW file isn't a picture yet — it's close to the unprocessed data straight off your camera's sensor, in a container format specific to whoever made the camera. No browser, and almost no general-purpose photo viewer, can display that directly. It has to be demosaiced (reconstructing full color at every pixel from the sensor's mosaic) and color-processed first, which is exactly what a RAW converter does.

Good to know before you convert

This applies a default render, not your own edits

LibRaw demosaics and color-processes the sensor data with standard settings — auto white balance and brightness. It doesn't know about any edits you made in Lightroom, Capture One, or your camera's own software.

12- or 14-bit sensor data drops to 8-bit

Every output format offered here is 8-bit. The extra shadow and highlight recovery headroom your camera captured is flattened during conversion.

Some newer or unusual RAW variants may not decode

Camera makers periodically introduce new compressed RAW variants. If this build of LibRaw doesn't recognize one, you'll get a clear error rather than a broken image.

Large files take real time to decode

Demosaicing a 40-60+ megapixel sensor file is genuinely CPU-intensive. Expect a few seconds per photo rather than the near-instant conversion of an already-processed image.

TIFF output is uncompressed

That's a real limitation of the browser-side TIFF encoder we use, not a hidden setting — expect a notably larger file than a typical camera JPEG.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I open my camera's RAW file in a normal photo viewer?

A RAW file holds close to unprocessed sensor data in a container specific to your camera's maker — Canon's CR2/CR3, Nikon's NEF, Sony's ARW, and so on. It has to be demosaiced into an ordinary RGB image before anything can display it. This tool does that with a WebAssembly build of LibRaw, the open-source engine behind many desktop RAW workflows, entirely in your browser.

Which RAW formats does this tool accept, and what can I convert them to?

It accepts .cr2, .cr3, .nef, .arw, .dng, .raf, and .rw2, and converts any of them to JPG, PNG, WEBP, AVIF, ICO, PDF, or TIFF.

Why is my exported TIFF file so large?

The browser-side TIFF encoder this tool uses currently writes uncompressed files. It's a real limitation of that library, not something you're doing wrong.

Why is converting a RAW file slower than a JPG or WEBP?

Because there's genuinely more work to do — the browser has to reconstruct full color at every pixel from the sensor's raw mosaic, instead of just re-encoding an already-processed image. Large files from high-megapixel cameras can take several seconds even running entirely on your device.

Why did my RAW file fail to convert?

Usually one of two things: the file uses a newer or unusual compressed RAW variant this build of LibRaw doesn't yet support, or the file is corrupted or incomplete. This tool reports a clear error rather than producing a broken image.

Do you store or see my photos?

No. Decoding and re-encoding both happen locally in your browser using WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded to a server, and nothing is retained once you close or refresh the page.
