What each output format is actually good for

JPG

Universal compatibility, and usually a dramatically smaller file than the source TIFF. Lossy compression at 92% quality by default here.

PNG

Lossless, with transparency support — a good middle ground when you want to keep TIFF's fidelity but need something browsers and image tools handle natively.

WEBP

Modern and broadly supported (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14+, Edge), typically far smaller than the uncompressed or lightly compressed TIFFs scanners produce.

AVIF

The smallest files of the group, but encoding support in browsers is still uneven. If your browser can't produce one, you'll get a clear error.

ICO

Windows/macOS icon and favicon container. This tool writes a single PNG-compressed icon resized to a maximum of 256×256px.

PDF

Wraps the image as a single, full-page PDF sized exactly to the image's pixel dimensions — a natural fit for a scanned document.

TIFF, in plain terms

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) was created in 1986 by Aldus Corporation — the company behind PageMaker — working with Microsoft and a group of scanner manufacturers who needed a common file format for the images their hardware produced. Revision 5.0 in 1988 added palette colour and LZW compression; Revision 6.0, published in 1992, is still the baseline spec today. Adobe took over maintaining the format after acquiring Aldus in 1994. Decades later, TIFF is still the default choice in scanning, faxing, pre-press, and archival workflows, precisely because it's lossless and can hold very high image quality — at the cost of much larger files than web formats.

Why TIFF needs a converter like this

Outside of Safari, no major browser ever added native TIFF decoding to the <img> tag — TIFF was built for scanners and pre-press software, not the web, so it was never a priority for browser vendors. This tool works around that by decoding TIFF itself with a dedicated JavaScript library (UTIF.js), so it behaves the same no matter which browser opened this page.

Good to know before you convert

Multi-page TIFFs convert only the first page

Scanned faxes and multi-page documents are common in TIFF. Every output format here represents a single image, so only the first page is used.

Most compressions are supported — one isn't

Uncompressed, LZW, PackBits, and CCITT Group 3/4 (fax) compressed TIFFs decode fine, which covers the vast majority of scanner and print output. The rarer ZIP/Deflate compression mode isn't currently supported and will show a clear decode error.

High bit-depth and CMYK data is flattened to standard 8-bit RGB

All six output formats here are 8-bit. Professional TIFFs with 16-bit channels or CMYK colour are converted down during decoding.

The output file will usually be much smaller

Unlike some of our other converters, this direction typically shrinks the file — TIFFs are often uncompressed or lightly compressed to begin with.

Why won't my TIFF file open in Chrome or Firefox?

What happens with a multi-page TIFF, like a scanned fax or document?

This tool converts the first page only. Every output format here represents a single image, so a multi-page TIFF would need to be split page by page for a full conversion.

Why did decoding my TIFF file fail?

The decoder here handles uncompressed, LZW, PackBits, and CCITT Group 3/4 (fax) compressed TIFFs — the vast majority of real-world files. The rarer ZIP/Deflate compression mode isn't currently supported, and some malformed or unusual TIFF variants may also fail to parse.

Why did my AVIF conversion fail?

AVIF encoding support varies by browser and version. This tool checks whether your browser can actually produce an AVIF image and tells you clearly if it can't.

Do you store or see my files?

No. Decoding and re-encoding both happen locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, and nothing is retained once you close or refresh the page.
