Why AVIF still needs a converter like this
AVIF is built on AV1, a royalty-free video codec, which is exactly why its browser support spread faster than HEIC's ever did — no licensing fight to hold it back. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge added AVIF support in 2020-2021; Safari followed in version 16 (2022). Good to know before you convert
AVIF can store 10- or 12-bit color and HDR metadata. Every output format offered here is 8-bit SDR, so that extra tonal range is flattened during conversion.
Like WEBP, AVIF can hold multiple frames. This tool converts the first frame only — every output format here is a single still image.
PNG, WEBP, and ICO keep an alpha channel from the source AVIF. JPG, PDF, and TIFF here flatten transparency onto a solid background instead.
